Thor 4 Star Natalie Portman Reflects On Her Avengers: Endgame Cameo

Natalie Portman, who returns to the MCU next month in Thor: Love and Thunder, has recalled seeing her cameo in Avengers: Endgame, despite not actually filming any new footage for the movie.

Natalie Portman first joined the MCU in 2011’s Thor as Jane Foster, an astrophysicist who aided – and found herself falling for – Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. The two were reunited in the much maligned 2013 sequel, Thor: The Dark World, but by the time of the series’ third installment, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Thor and Jane had apparently broken up.

Jane Foster went on to make a fleeting appearance in Avengers: Endgame, the film’s time travel plot taking Thor back to the events of The Dark World, but returns properly in Thor: Love and Thunder, which will see her taking on the mantle of the Mighty Thor.

While Natalie Portman is briefly seen as Jane Foster in Avengers: Endgame, the actress actually didn’t shoot anything for the film. Instead, footage from Thor: The Dark World was repurposed, while Portman provided some new dialogue via ADR.

Talking to Variety about seeing herself in the film, despite never being on set, Natalie Portman joked that “It was very easy for me.” Going on to discuss the experience of watching herself in Avengers: Endgame, she revealed:

“I mean, it’s always amazing to see yourself, even if only for a split second, in a Marvel film, because you’re in places that you’ve never actually been before. It’s like seeing photos from a vacation that you never took or something.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Natalie Portman tactfully dodge a question about whether Thor: Love and Thunder would include Jane Foster’s battle against breast cancer, which featured in the comic book run that saw her become the Mighty Thor. However, Portman did say that becoming an Asgardian superhero “might give you a different perspective on your human life.”

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming Thor film and Natalie Portman’s MCU future, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
