The road to Indiana Jones 5 has been an incredibly long one and it is still far from over. Talks involving the fifth installment to that franchise have been going on for years. The project didn’t really start to pick up steam until original director Steven Spielberg left the project in favor of Logan director James Mangold.
Since then, the cast of Indiana Jones 5 has steadily filled out with well-known character actors like Mads Mikkelsen and Thomas Kretschmann. It has also been delayed several times and the first official photo for the film was only revealed earlier this year. Oddly enough, the film doesn’t have too many veteran members of the cast and crew on board outside of Harrison Ford. One person who was not left out, however, was John Williams.
John Williams is a legendary composer whose work and influence are impossible to understate. His musical work includes scoring all of the main Star Wars films, several installments of the Harry Potter film franchise, and many of Steven Spielberg’s films which include the Indiana Jones movies. However, at the age of 90, the composer may be ready to leave it all behind after he wraps up work on the latest film.
While speaking to Associated Press, John Williams admitted he was considering stepping away from the film industry after he completed his work on Indiana Jones 5. However, he stated that he will not completely retire from music:
“At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.
At this point in life, [it’s] a long commitment to me. I don’t want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity.”
John Williams’ more recent work includes scoring a theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi and the soundtracks for the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Music work for the various spinoff films and shows had been left to others like Michael Giacchino and John Powell. His last Oscar nomination was for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Full plot details for Indiana Jones 5 are being kept under wraps, but Harrison Ford has mentioned that the film will see new developments in the adventurer’s life and relationships in addition to resolving part of his history. The film will mark Lucasfilm’s first entry in the franchise while under the Disney umbrella.
Indiana Jones 5 opens in theaters on June 30, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and John Williams’ future in the film industry and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
