‘Joker’ Parody Film Pulled By TIFF For ‘Rights Issues’

The People’s Joker was scheduled to play at the Toronto International Film Festival but was ultimately pulled due to “rights issues.”

The Toronto International Film Festival is currently underway, and a Joker parody film debuted during Midnight Madness on Tuesday. More screenings for The People’s Joker were set to take place, but the film was later pulled due to “rights issues” on the festival’s website. Here is the full message that was posted:

“The filmmaker has withdrawn this film due to rights issues. We apologize for any inconvenience. Current ticket holders will receive an email from TIFF Customer Relations with information on their purchase.”

The People’s Joker star and director Vera Drew later responded to the film being pulled by TIFF on her Twitter, writing the following:

“I have no clue how today goes and my team wants me to say nothing of course so I’ll stay vague… But whatever happens in the next few hours, I want you to know…if you’ve been waiting and aching to watch our movie, ur going to get to soon. Stay tuned and stay with me. Need ur help.”

What Was The People’s Joker About?

The film’s premise is as follows, “After years numbing herself with irony and an inhalant called Smylex, an unfunny aspiring clown grapples with gender identity, first love, and old foes all while founding an illegal comedy theater in Gotham City.” While the film is no longer screening at the film festival and might never see the light of day, you can still watch a trailer for The People’s Joker below.

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film:

Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker: Folie á Deux hits theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for all the latest news on The People’s Joker as it develops, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s youtube channel for more original video content.
