It was an especially painful blow to the ocean of Bob Odenkirk supporters out there, who came out of the woodwork en masse last year when the lovable star collapsed on set following a heart attack. For his 63 outings as Saul Goodman (99 if you count his award-worthy but yet again unrecognized “Breaking Bad” guest performances), Odenkirk earned five Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama Series nominations.
AMC’s popular crime series enjoyed its sixth Outstanding drama Series nod in 2022, but lost out once more to HBO’s “Succession.” Further Emmy accolades for “Better Call Saul” include nominations for: Outstanding Writing for a drama Series for Gordon Smith and Thomas Schnauz; Outstanding Directing for a drama Series for Gilligan; and Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress for a drama Series for Jonathan Banks, Giancarlo Esposito, and Rhea Seehorn.
It’s little consolation, but “Better Call Saul” is in good company when you consider the scads of notorious Television Academy snubs in past years. Over its 79 installments in the late 1960s, sci-fi juggernaut “Star Trek: The Original Series” failed to make it past the podium despite its 13 nominations. So too did beloved sitcoms such as Mike Schur’s “The Good Place” and Schur and Greg Daniels’ “Parks and Recreation,” earning 13 and 14 nominations over their runs respectively. Netflix’s animated masterpiece “BoJack Horseman,” HBO’s infamously underrated “The Wire,” and Fox’s “Empire” were similarly acknowledged — but never awarded — for the indelible marks their stories left on the small screen.
To honor “Better Call Saul” — because somebody has to — IndieWire has rounded up 17 of the best shows ever snubbed at the Primetime Emmy Awards. Series with one or zero nominations have been excluded from consideration: narrowing this list to titles the Television Academy agreed were good, but failed to admire as truly worthy of hardware.
Note: Titles are listed in increasing order by number of nominations, and sorted alphabetically in the case of a tie.
