The new feature called ‘Nudity Protection’ detects a nude image and blurs it out while giving the user an option to open the photo or leave it alone. Although the tool is still developing, Meta said more details would be within the next few weeks, as told by Production Community Manager Liz Fernandez. She said the company is working closely with experts to ensure the new feature will ‘preserve people’s privacy while giving them control over the messages they receive.’

‘Nudity Protection’ was initially announced by tech leaker and mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi.’Securely detect & cover nudity. technology on your device covers photos that may contain nudity in chats. instagram can’t access the photos,’ he wrote in a tweet.

According to the Daily Mail, the feature is similar to the ‘Hidden Words’ tool on Instagram, where users can hide specific harmful words from their feeds or posts. Fernandez added that the ‘Nudity Protection’ will be an optional user feature.

instagram users were pleased with the feature as many have experienced being sent an unsolicited nude photos from a stranger. However, some were critical and mentioned how sex workers post nude photos on twitter and instagram for money.
