As a musician, inspiration can come from a Sahu Newsof sources, including other artists’ works. It is common for musicians to draw inspiration from their counterparts, whether it’s a particular song or a particular artist’s style. When listening to another artist’s music, a musician may be struck by a certain melody or chord progression, a unique production technique, or a powerful lyric that resonates with them.
Beyond the music itself, other artists’ creations can inspire a musician also in more abstract ways. Seeing another artist succeed with a particular style or approach can give a musician the confidence to try something similar themselves. Being exposed to new and diverse music can also expand a musician’s creative horizons and inspire them to explore new sounds and techniques in their own work.
Most artists don’t often hesitate to reveal the artists, songs, or albums that inspire them during their own creative processes, as it is a great way to pay homage to their musical idols. However, in a previous statement, the Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks went a little further than saying that Prince inspired him to write one of her pieces. Instead, she disclosed that her song, ‘Stand Back’ from her second solo studio album, ‘The Wild Heart,’ belonged to Prince.
As the story goes, Nicks created the track after hearing the late singer’s ‘Little Red Corvette‘ for the first time while she and her then-husband Kim Anderson were driving North to Santa Barbara for their honeymoon. She heard Prince’s new song on the radio and immediately started to create the lyrics for ‘Stand Back.’ Stevie then bought a little tape recorder not to forget the song.
She used Prince’s instrumental melody, but the lyrics and her singing style were completely different from the late icon. When Nicks wrapped up the song, she called Prince to tell the story of how his ‘Little Red Corvette’ had inspired her to write ‘Stand Back.’ Then, they met at Sunset Sound studio in L.A. twenty minutes after their phone call.
Later in an interview with Timothy White, Stevie Nicks gave more details about their time in the studio. She revealed that Prince stayed with her there for about twenty-five minutes and then left. Although it was seemingly a short time, Nicks was mesmerized by what Prince could do just with two piano players in the studio.
Here is what Nicks said about her time with Prince in the studio:
“[He] walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about 25 minutes, and then left. He spoiled me for every band I’ve ever had because nobody can exactly recreate – not even with two piano players – what Prince did all by his little self.”
So, it seems like Prince gave his blessing to the Fleetwood Mac singer for using his song’s melody, considering that he even came to the studio to propose some ideas to her. Eventually, Nicks released ‘Stand Back’ as the lead single of ‘The Wild Heart.’ The track went to number 5 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100, thanks to the spirit of Prince. Although the late singer didn’t get a songwriting credit on the album, Nicks admitted that ‘Stand Back’ belonged to him.
