The Way of Water Swims Past $2 Billion Worldwide

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has joined the exclusive two-billion dollar club.

Avatar: The Way of Water is now the sixth-highest grossing movie in history, having so far earned a little over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. The long-awaited sequel to Avatar, The Way of Water has generated $598 million at the domestic box office and $1.426 billion billion overseas, with its worldwide total standing at $2.024B through Sunday, as reported by Disney.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron becomes the first director to have three movies with more than $2 billion at the box office. Cameron previously directed Avatar and Titanic, which brought in $2.923 billion and $2.187 billion globally, respectively.

The first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing release in history with $2.923 billion. The movie was at one-point dethroned by the Marvel Studios feature Avengers: Endgame before a re-release put it back on top of the all-time box office charts.

The Way of Water is rated PG-13 and runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes, making it about 30 minutes longer than the first entry in the Avatar series. The sequel is a hit with critics, as it holds a certified fresh ratting on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Its budget is somewhere between $350 million to $400 million.
